At Orchard Workshop we run a variety of arts and crafts courses, which can either be taken purely for enjoyment, or to gain an NCFE certificate.
Silversmithing
These courses are suitable for beginners or those with some experience. If you are a beginner you will be offered a series of small projects that are intended to introduce you to some of the methods, tools and materials used, giving you a good foundation of skills on which to build. More advanced projects will improve and add to these skills. You will explore and experiment with different processes and apply them to your own designs.
Stained Glass
You will learn, develop and explore the art of stained glass, using traditional lead came and copper foil techniques. You will be taught how to use tools safely whilst working on your own projects and designs with advice and help from your tutor. You will also be able to experiment with other techniques such as fusing.
Woodwork
Learn to use tools safely and accurately; cut joints, design and finish projects. Your skills and confidence will be developed through projects ranging from producing basic shelving and storage units to more complex pieces.
Woodwork and Woodturning
Learn to use woodworking and woodturning tools safely and accurately. You will be taught how to make small items of furniture using various wood jointing techniques. You will also learn how to use the woodturning lathe to produce turned components for your projects or individual pieces such as bowls or candlesticks.
Woodwork and Stained Glass
If you are interested in woodwork AND stained glass then this is the course for you. Make a set project - a small cabinet - incorporating wood and stained glass.
Enamelling
Learn to fuse enamels to metal using traditional enamelling techniques such as cleaning the metal, preparing and applying the enamel and firing. More advanced students will learn cloisonne and plique-a-jour techniques. A wide variety of projects may be produced from jewellery to small decorative pieces.
Enterprise Course
This is a unique course offering craft skills and advice on working in the arts and crafts sector, with a choice between stained glass and jewellery/silversmithing skills. This is an ideal course for anyone who is unemployed and interested in learning more about using their craft skills either in the workforce or in a voluntary capacity.
